How to Find Reliable Suppliers in China: A Practical Guide for African Traders
Every African trader knows the opportunity in China. But finding a supplier you can actually trust is where most people get burned. This guide gives you the exact steps to verify, contact, and work with Chinese manufacturers safely.
China is the world's largest manufacturing hub. For African traders, that means access to virtually any product at competitive prices. But the gap between finding a supplier online and actually receiving quality goods is where deals fall apart.
The most common mistake is contacting a supplier on Alibaba, chatting on WhatsApp, sending money, and then waiting. Sometimes it works. Often it doesn't. The problem is not China — it's the lack of a verification process before you pay.
Step 1 — Start with the right platforms. Alibaba is the most well-known but not always the best. For general merchandise, also check 1688.com (China's domestic wholesale platform — prices are lower but it's in Chinese). For electronics and tech accessories, try Made-in-China.com. For trade fairs, the Canton Fair held in Guangzhou twice a year is the single best place to meet verified manufacturers in person.
Step 2 — Verify before you chat. On Alibaba, look for "Verified Supplier" badges and check how long the company has been on the platform. Request their business licence (营业执照). Search the company name on China's official business registry at gsxt.gov.cn. If they refuse to share any documents, walk away.
Step 3 — Order a sample first. Never order in bulk from a new supplier without first ordering a sample. Pay for the sample at full price — any supplier who offers free samples to a new unknown buyer may be a trader, not a manufacturer. Test the sample thoroughly before approving bulk production.
Step 4 — Use Trade Assurance. When placing your first bulk order on Alibaba, always use Trade Assurance. This is Alibaba's buyer protection programme. If goods don't match the agreed specification, you can open a dispute and get a refund. Never pay outside Alibaba for your first order.
Step 5 — Get an inspection before shipment. For orders above $2,000 USD, hire a third-party inspection company in China to check the goods before they leave the factory. Companies like QIMA or SGS operate across China and cost $200–$400 for a pre-shipment inspection. It is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
