How African Entrepreneurs Can Source Products from China (Without Getting Burned)

China is the world's manufacturing hub, but navigating it as an African trader comes with real risks. Here's how to do it right.

For Nigerian and African entrepreneurs, China represents an unmatched sourcing opportunity. Whether you're importing electronics, textiles, furniture, cosmetics, or agricultural equipment, the factories are here and the prices are competitive. But without the right approach, it's also where a lot of people lose money.

The most common mistake is trusting a supplier you found on Alibaba or WeChat without any verification. Scams range from taking your deposit and disappearing, to shipping you products that look nothing like the samples. This happens daily. especially to first-time importers.

Before you pay anything, you need to verify the supplier. Ask for their business licence (营业执照), check their factory on Google Maps, request a video call showing the production floor, and ideally have someone on the ground in China inspect the facility in person.

The best markets for African traders are Yiwu (general merchandise. the largest wholesale market in the world), Guangzhou (electronics, fashion, cosmetics), and Shenzhen (tech, gadgets, accessories). Each city has a different character and speciality.

When it comes to payment, never pay 100% upfront. The standard is 30% deposit, 70% before shipment. Use a Trade Assurance order on Alibaba where possible. it gives you some protection if the goods don't match the agreed specification.

Shipping options from China to Nigeria include sea freight (cheapest, 25–40 days), air freight (fast, expensive), and courier (for small samples). Most traders use sea freight via Lagos port for bulk orders.
